Nike's or Aldi Specials - Choosing you solicitor

For many buying a property can feel a bit like running a marathon. With my participation in the Rotterdam Marathon 2016 only 7 days away, today's blog is all about why choosing the right shoes to run the 26.2 miles is as important as choosing the right solicitor.

Aldi were punting some running shoes recently. What a bargain! A pair of running shoes for under £20. That's more than £80 less than a pair of Nike's. However skimping on the essentials like the proper shoes is like going with a cheap solicitor's quote. The most important part of equipment when running a marathon and buying a house are the running shoes and the choice of solicitor. It is simple as that!

Now don't get me wrong you may get away with your Aldi specials. The way that you run may be neutral and you may not get injured. However if you do not run with a neutral gait and either pronate or supinate then you can expect to hobble off the course before you get any where near that medal. The same can be said of the cheap solicitor. You may be lucky and find that your transaction does not have any problems and as long as the solicitor on the other side and you are prepared to do alot of the donkey work, chasing the transaction along and keeping on top of your solicitor then you may get away with it.

Why would you take the risk? How many times are you going to buy a property?

As with all things in life you get what you pay for. In paying for the service - you certainly pay for what you get. The higher the fee then the more likely that the work will be being done by a solicitor not just being monitored by him. It is more of an insurance policy. Would it not be better to know that the person dealing with the legals has the expertise, the knowledge and experience so that if the transaction went off the rails then that solicitor would know why it had gone off the rails, how to put it back on the tracks as well as giving you a timescale for doing all of this?

Of course it would.

You pays your money and takes your choice - just don't come bleating when it all goes Pete Tonge if you have paid for the monkey and not the organ grinder!
